  •  Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), more commonly known as acid reflux, affects 19.8 percent of adults in the United States (roughly 47.3 million people). Those who suffer from the disease can attest to the sometimes crippling discomfort it causes. Although medications and surgical options are available, increasingly, medical professionals are touting the benefits of consuming a more alkaline diet in order to control acid reflux.

For both immediate and long-term survival, the body must maintain balance between acidity and alkalinity. In fact, the link between dietary pH balance and various health issues has been recognized by physicians since the early 20th century, although it is only recently creating buzz. This is because the modern diet is vastly different than it was 100 years ago due to the wide availability of protein. Since protein is now a significant component of most meals, the bulk of the current American diet consists primarily of foods that leave an acidic residue within the body. This occurs when food is metabolized and broken down, leaving certain chemical and metallic residues which yield either acid or alkaline potentials of pH for the body. Try drinking kangen water, or type in alkaline water everyday

  •   An apple a day keeps the doctor away !!! When I feel pain coming on I usually go for a yogurt right away. If not ill eat an apple and within 10-20 min I feel better.

  • Tried tums X3 with split second relief followed by feeling more worse off than before. Tried the Tsp of mustard at 140 am which made the burn worse... followed by more pain and suffering. Seen someone put down ginger and seeing as how I was desperate I took the tube of ginger I get at the supermarket that's minced into a paste took a Tsp of it and within 2 mons I feel great. Good luck everyone else :)
  • The best home remedy for heartburn is just plain iceberg lettuce. Wash and follow up about 4 leaves and lunch away. I guarantee you ,that your heartburn will cease within the next 10-20 minutes. Works every time. Always have a nice salad when you have spices foods, salad last....you'll be good to go.

  • I tried the spoonfuls of smooth peanut butter. I was skeptical, but to my surprise it really helped!!! After 2 spoonfuls I felt like I could lay down again, and with a 3rd spoonful had even more relief!!

  • I had awful acid reflux & gastritis every day for 6 months. Anyone who's experienced it will tell you it has a direct impact on your life. The doctor gave me Nexium, and carafate, nothing worked. After hours of research I found out they're actually doing more damage. They prevent your own natural acid which you need. I decided to look online and everyone said to try apple cider vinegar. I couldn't believe it, I had minor relief in minutes, and within 2 days my symptoms were almost gone. It's been 7 days and my symptoms are gone. I also take 2 probiotics a day. I don't drink it down. I just mix the 2 oz to about 8 oz of water and just sip it a little at a time. If I think I may be having a flare up, you know the clearing of the throat, and dry cough until you throat's raw. I just take a quip sip and POOF! it's gone. I was actually able to eat mexican food today, and not one problem.. I promise you it works, just try it. If you use RAW organic it's better for you. If not, then any regular apple cider vinegar will do. I promise it works, just give it a try. What do you have to lose.

  • Well it's 5:15am,and wham, while sleeping,I got acid reflex, and it was burning my throat so bad,I found this home remedy site, read them all,wow so many, but I tryed the sauerkraut juice,in a shot glass,WORKED WRIGHT AWAY.!!!! Took the throat pain away.then just for the heck,a shot of dill pickle juice,I feel so much better,I wrote this.now iam going back to sleep.good luck everyone,I know the pain of this acid reflux,in the throat hurts bad,but try these juices, and THANKS again.

  • I have had several bouts of acid reflux and the only thing that worked until now was AcipHex prescription but it cost $166. Then I read several of these entries, and decided to combine a few and see what happens. I had a pretty nasty bout, so I took a spoonful of peanut butter and a couple ounces of apple cider and it worked beautifully. Lastly, I sleep on the right-hand side or on my back and it seems to have cured it.
  • I suffered with acid reflux for a long time until I realized that good old Jif creamy smooth peanut butter was the best treatment for me. If I felt like it was going to bother me, I would take a spoon full or two before I went to bed. If I did not take it before laying down and started having a problem I'd get up and take two spoons full and be fine for the rest of the nite. I hope this helps some of you as it did me.
  • A few weeks ago I had a pretty nasty bout. Lasted for several hours. Finally, no reason why, I took a couple large swallows of Almond Milk. Pain went away nearly instantaneously. Then, a week later I had another bout. This time I immediately went to the Almond Milk. Again... worked fast and was a Godsend!
I don't know if this was a fluke, or I just found what works for me. However, thought I'd share.

  • My mom swears by soda crackers and they do work for me but for just a short time....I usually use tspn of baking soda in 1/2 water...makes you burp about 5 times and heartburn gone immediately afterwards.....I have a friend who eats a red apple immediately upon getting heartburn and gone for the day.....good luck!!!

  • The thing that seems to have really done the trick in controlling symptoms though is licorice tablets and licorice tea. I drink tea infused with organic licorice root throughout the day and take the tablets about twice a day (usually after meals). The tablets work instantly and I haven't had any symptoms for about a month now and have been sleeping so much better.
  • I was in so much pain! I didn't have any honey so I tried the celery. I stalk worked! Thank you!
  • As for as GERD, I suggest few suggestions in day to day life that will change the situation very positively without any medicines. 1. Eat only 75% of your apetite
    2. drink enuf water 3. most importantly, when you sleep , sleep on your right hand side down or on your back. (Never sleep on your stumock or on your left hand side) 4. Always sit straight.

  • I read suggestions and tried mustard. I was of course very skeptical about it! The idea of eating something acidic adding to more acid sounds crazy but the mustard actually worked!

When I first swallowed it (tablespoon)it burned very badly and thought to myself- this was a bad idea I will need to drink milk. But I gave it a couple of minutes and the burning had gone completely, my tummy felt great. It's definitely worth trying.
  • PICKLE JUICE!!! My new best friend third chronic acid reflux. I had a horrible bout with it one night when I felt like I couldn't breathe, I needed to burp but that acid vomit taste and I just couldn't burp. It hurt so bad even my ears were affected. A couple swallows of pickle juice and I burped with no struggle, and the pain slowly went away!!! I NEVER write reviews, nothing really works for me... But this does!!!
  • A Cure for Acid Reflux
I use Sauerkraut instead of any of the prescription or over the counter anti-acids, some are acid blockers which by blocking the production of stomach acids reduce the amount of acids
needed to process your foods, others neutralize the acids present.
Foods not properly digested can set and rot in your stomach and intestines. Cabbage when fermented in the
process of becoming Sauerkraut creates a natural enzime that causes the stomach acids to do their job without causing undue discomfort also the juice works as well, in some
countries Sauerkraut juice is sold for just stomach relief.
I used to suffer from acid reflux and was using a large bottle of tums regularly, then used Prilosec OTC. After using Sauerkraut
I have not used any other anti-acids (some of which are very hard on your liver) for over 5 years. Hope this helps, give it a try !
    say no to statin drugs.
  • Please try wheatgrass you can get it in powder form it works so fast..I swear by it.
  • I had a really bad cough for several months. I thought it was allergies because I have had them in the past and it was the season. The cough would not go away.

Finally I went to a primary doctor and then an ENT. They said I had GERD and started prescribing me different medications. So far I have tried Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec, and currently Zegerid. It has gotten a little better but not enough to really be excited about. The Doctor gave me a list of things not to eat and I researched it on the internet and a lot of the suggestions on here are actually things the doctor told me NOT to eat.

I don't really understand why he thinks I have GERD anyway because I cough ALL THE TIME, not just when I eat, although it is worse when I eat.

Someone said to eat ice cream and I can tell you that it is my favorite food and I eat way too much of it and it usually makes the coughing worse. But I guess different things work for different people.
  •  My PCP told me about this remedy for acid reflux:
Put the tips of your fingers (both hands) just below your sternum and apply firm pressure for 30 seconds. Firm pressure, but don't hurt yourself. FYI: your sternum is between your breasts,. This really works.
  • I used to get terrible acid reflux, tried all medicines, did not helped. Then I stopped drinking Tea, Coffee, Soda Cans completely and started drinking milk with almonds before sleeping. I now get acid reflux very rarely. It's almost gone.
  • i started having problems with acid reflux or GERDS during my first pregnacy. my second pregnacy wasn`t so bad..... but over the years it`s gotten so bad i was prescribed meds. but after research and just reading the side effects, i told myself that i would only take my meds when my 'episodes' where unbarrible. and other times i would grab just a COCA COLA. room temp or cold. and honestly, it`s worked in the past and right now as we speak. you will burp, and pass gas. but it such RELIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Recently, My doctor diagnosed me with acid reflux disease, and prescribe a powerful drug for me, which needless to say, had all kinds of side effects! So I started researching alternative medicine ideas.... The one that really I can honestly say 'cured' my acid reflux was: 'Yogi' brand herbal tea: Egyptian Licorice Mint.
Every night about an hour before going to bed, I will fix a cup and drink, and still enjoy the diet, I've always had..... Acid Reflux Gone!!!
  • Pureed apple gives instant relief. Keep a jar of apple sauce in the fridge and tins of baby food pureed apple in the handbag, glovebox and at work. I have had the flap of my oesophagus permanently cut open and was told I'd be on medication for life but I just either grab apple sauce or a tin of baby food and I'm fixed in 30 seconds.
  • This is the ultimate cure for extreme heartburn. Take one teaspoon of regular kitchen honey and this will stop your heartburn in a very short time. Honey is also a healing remedy that will sooth and help in healing an irritated esophagus.
  • Eat an apple (or watermelon, or anything which is basic and can absorb the acid in the stomach) as soon as you get up, early every morning, pref before 6.30. Eat at least 2hrs before bed time. THE ABOVE TWO ARE MOST IMPORTANT. Do not eat overly spicy foods. Drink orange juice after meals to aid in digestion. Avoid excessive caffeine. Drink lots of water in general (not immediately after a meal). Eat sufficient quantity of proteins. Take multivitamins (B, omega3 esp) to reduce stress and relax the body.

  • i have acid reflux and i just drink a warm glass of ginger ale and chew some gum and that does the trick for me...
  • Acid reflux
2 oz Aloe Vera Juice Daily.
May add honey to get the bitterness out.
I got to admit, I was put on a dare to try this. I was on 6 medications for acid reflux-and put on a dare to try aloe vera juice. I stopped all medication for acid reflux and did this dare for a month. Your talking to someone that went through a big Rolaid bottle a week and prescriptions. After a month, i notieced improvement. I managed to even cut down my rolaids.
Now, I only occossianly have to take a rolaid or tums. I love this, even though it tastes wretched.
  • just eat ice cream until it goes away, a pint will do just fine...so everytime you sit down to eat or do anything that sparks your acid reflux, have your ice cream on hand...I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.
  • drink a small can of saurkraut juice! It works for me for a full 24 hours and heals erosin and ulcers.
I also get a small glass of water, sugar, mix baking soda, mix, white vinager, mix and drink while still fizzing. It works for a while and does not taste bad if you mix it right.
I also heard but not tried equal parts of cinnamon and honey in warm water is what they use in eastern countries.
But the suarkraut is the best nutralizer!!!! And it cools. I get so bad I bleed and it does not hurt.

  • Drink organic, whole leaf aloe very juice (dietary supplement - not the topical that you'd put on your skin) several times a day.
I have been on antacids for most of my adult life and the constant use of antacids was causing additional digestive issues (both prescription and over the counter). I started drinking 1/2 oz to a full oz several times a day (first thing in AM and before bed and if my stomach bothered me during the day). After a few days, I no longer needed the antacids. The aloe vera juice is calming and healing and it has other great benefits as well.
  • Stay Away From Pop,Sugar,And Candy That Is Very Important.Drink Plenty Of Water,I Boiled Hot Water And Added A Squeeze Of Lemon,It Tasted Very Sour And Bitter But It Helps A Lot And Can Empty Your Bowel Movement If Necessary.Pepto Bismol Can Also Temporary Relief It.I Have Had It For Almost A Year And Never Thought Anything Of It Until I Went To A Party Very Far And My Stomach Really Started Hurting..WORST DAY OF MY LIFE..Until I Found Out I Had Acid Reflux.
  • Hazelwood is an ancient remedy first used by aboriginal people. It has the medicinal property of neutralizing the body’s acidity. It relieves or prevents acid-related ailments such as ulcers, acid reflux, and heartburn.
Hazelwood is worn as a necklace, and in order to receive a therapeutic benefit, the hazelwood necklace must come in direct contact with the skin and be worn as much as possible, including overnight.

  • 1 level tsp. BAKING SODA mixed into a glass of lukewarm water, chug, burp a few times, and feel the relief. Ahhhhh! Chase with a cool glass of water if desired. Process may be repeated for severe cases. My great grandfather taught my grandma this, and she taught me. The other day I saw an episode of Food Detectives on the Food Network and they tried several known home remedies and over-the-counter remedies as well, and it so happens that BAKING SODA (an Alkaline) was shown to be the most effective. As we all learned in high school chemistry class, Acid is neutralized by Alkaline.

  • I have really bad Heart burn/Acid Reflux. I have erosions on my esphogus. I have tried this and it helps a great deal. Before each meal eat a piece of celery. Do not place anything on it but make sure it is cut in a slender piece and eat one before your meal and one after. It calms the acid in your stomach and helps you digest your food better. I have had this problem for 25 years and trying this has really been a blessing. God Bless.
